Butler Grizzlies rally to defeat Rangers in CHAMPS-Heart of Texas Bowl
The No. 12 Butler Community College Grizzlies outscored Kilgore College 21-7 in the second half Dec. 3 to claim victory of the Tips-CHAMPS Heart of Texas Bowl at Memorial Stadium at Texas A&M University Commerce.
Butler opened the scoring with a 7-yard TD pass with 5:34 left in the first quarter, but KC responded on its next drive with a 43-yard TD reception from Judah Holtzclaw to Willie McCoy to tie the game up a minute later.
In the second quarter, Christopher Baldazo nailed a 29-yard field goal to put KC ahead, 10-7, and with 3:07 left in the half, Willie McCoy returned a Grizzly punt 60 yards to paydirt to give KC a 17-7 advantage heading into halftime.
Butler scored first in the second half on a 10-yard TD pass eight minutes into the third quarter and capitalized on a blocked punt returned for a TD to make the score 21-17 after three quarters.
In the fourth quarter, Butler capitalized on a KC interception, rushing for an 11-yard TD on the ensuing possession.
The Rangers' Donerio Davenport scored once more for KC from six yards out to make the score 28-24, but that was as close as the Rangers would get.
KC's Willie McCoy was named as the Rangers' bowl MVP.
